Geethartha Chinthane 141: Modern Education Boosting “Ego”
Team Udayavani, Dec 31, 2024, 11:27 AM IST
From a young age, children should not be encouraged to develop excessive pride. The downfall of today’s society is due to modern education boosting children’s “ego.” This was not the case earlier. There was an awareness that excessive praise would diminish their character. This is the fundamental difference between Western and Eastern cultures and education systems. Excessive ego is dangerous not only to parents but also to society. The essence of Vedanta lies in reducing this pride.
“Nothing truly belongs to you. Therefore, there is no basis for pride in claiming ownership. Why desire such dangerous pride?” – This is Lord Krishna’s perspective. It is difficult to remove deeply ingrained pride. “Ego” is rajasic and tamasic in nature. Therefore, one must continuously reflect on the principle of ‘Idam Na Mama’ (This is not mine) at every step.
Childhood, youth, and old age – do we control these stages of life? They come naturally. There is no need to grieve over what occurs naturally. Suffering arises from what is unnatural. There is no reason to grieve over something that does not belong to us. Does this mean one should sit idle? No, the message is to perform one’s duties diligently.
