Geethartha Chinthane 144: No Other Authority Equal to the Vedas

Team Udayavani, Jan 3, 2025, 9:35 AM IST

The Vedas affirm the concept of the soul being distinct from the body. However, objections arise when this is taken as an established truth. In various religions, the words of their respective founders are accepted as ultimate authority. These founders are revered as the sole source of truth by their followers. The Vedas, however, are different—they do not have a specific author.

When one individual makes a claim, another might contradict it. Such differences in opinion among founders make it difficult to accept their words as the ultimate truth. In contrast, the authority of perception (pratyaksha) is not entirely denied, even if perception sometimes errs. Similarly, the authority of the Vedas cannot be dismissed due to minor objections.

The Vedas are considered apaurusheya (not man-made) because they lack human authorship. This unique quality makes the Vedas self-evident and inherently authoritative. The concept of “authority” itself is a vast subject. While objections may arise, they cannot completely invalidate the Vedas. If such objections were to succeed, debates and counterarguments among various founders and systems of thought would proliferate.

The Vedas stand apart as they are free from human biases or influences. They are not grounded in individual expectations or imaginations, making them timeless and universally valid. There is no other apaurusheya authority to rival the Vedas. They represent the ultimate truth, leaving no room for dispute.
