Karkala: Internet connectivity issues are not limited to rural areas but are a challenge in urban areas like Karkala as well. A significant number of residents rely on BSNL services but face persistent service disruptions. Despite being loyal customers for years, many are left demanding upgrades to BSNL’s broadband and mobile network services.

In areas like the vicinity of Raghavendra Math within the town, even 2G network services are unreliable. Locals report that essential tasks often get delayed, forcing them to switch to private service providers. Complaints filed with BSNL result in temporary fixes, but the core issues remain unresolved, leading to frustration among users.

Limited Infrastructure and Delayed Upgrades

Karkala municipality jurisdiction has 18 network towers, with most operated by private companies. While private operators have upgraded to 5G, BSNL is still struggling to provide consistent 3G and 4G services.

Government offices in the region, which depend on BSNL for internet, are also impacted. Tasks like online application processing, ration card updates, and other software-dependent operations are often disrupted due to slow internet speeds. Though BSNL claims to provide 80 Mbps connections, customers report receiving only around 40 Mbps, adding to their grievances.

UPI Payments Affected

Residents have raised concerns about issues with UPI payments in and around Karkala. Payment delays, failed transactions, and confusion during purchases have led many to abandon UPI payment options altogether. Businesses and customers alike are affected due to poor internet connectivity.

Calls for Systematic Upgrades

“There are significant network issues in Karkala municipality areas, despite better connectivity in rural regions. Basic tasks like Google Pay transactions are difficult, and internet services are vital for various needs today. The government must upgrade BSNL’s infrastructure to provide better service,” said Dr. Arun Kumar S.R. from Karkala.

“Complaints about network issues in areas like Peraje and Pathonjikatte, have been made multiple times. Officials appear helpless, and substandard equipment and batteries are reportedly used for tower maintenance. Authorities must investigate and improve BSNL services. Elected representatives and the government should devise proper plans to address these issues,” said Santosh from Pathonjikatte.
