Moodigere: A woman lost her life following an attack by a wild gaur in Halekote village of Moodigere taluk on Wednesday, January 8.

Workers of Assam origin were engaged in coffee picking at Sharadamba Estate, owned by coffee grower Halekote Ramesh. The incident occurred around 11 a.m. when a gaur suddenly charged at them.

The deceased has been identified as Basuri Bibi (42), a married woman from Assam, working as a labourer at the estate.

The gaur pierced the woman’s abdomen and chest with its horns, causing fatal injuries that led to her immediate death.

Forest department officials visited the scene to conduct an inquiry. The deceased’s body was shifted to the Moodigere MGM Hospital for post-mortem examination.

The death of the worker has left her family and relatives in deep shock and grief.

The number of gaurs in Malnad region has been increasing and the animals frequently enter coffee plantations. This has been causing extensive damage to crops and also poses a threat to human lives. Local residents have urged the forest department to take immediate and effective measures to control the gaur population and prevent further incidents.
