Geethartha Chinthane 151: Space and Time Are Eternal and Infinite

The concept of virtue (punya) and sin (papa) mentioned in the Vedas was later elaborated by Sri Krishna and Vedavyasa. However, the original statements belong to the Vedas, which are considered apaurusheya (not of human origin). This apaurusheya nature defines the greatness of Sanatana Dharma. Just as no one questions the Constitution, the Vedas are accepted without question. As thinker Dr. U.R. Ananthamurthy once said, “What is beyond questioning is worthy of acceptance.”

The Vedas are revered for their purity and being beyond doubt. Anything beyond questioning must meet certain standards of evidence. The Vedas are unquestionable, flawless, and free from human imperfections. Just as life itself has no beginning, space (desha) and time (kala) are also eternal and infinite.

Space doesn’t mean just geographical locations like India, America, or Africa. Here, desha signifies aakasha (space or expanse). When you reach a point where there is no further to go, that is aakasha. Similarly, God has no equal, and there is no equivalent to the Vedas. When we say there is no comparison, it doesn’t mean they don’t exist; it emphasizes their uniqueness.

Space and time are eternal and infinite. If one questions who created them, the answer is that the Vedas themselves are anadi (without beginning) and apaurusheya. This is why the dictum “Vedo—khilam dharmamoolam” (The Vedas are the root of all dharma) holds true.
