Geethartha Chinthane 152: Conviction Through Clarity

The validity of the Vedas has been emphasized by the three great Acharyas. Once their authority is accepted, discussions on their content follow. Scriptures, with the Vedas as their foundation, serve as the base of our spiritual edifice, much like a building’s blueprint. Since ancient times, one must accept the authority of the Vedas as the guiding principle for life. Accepting the Vedas’ authority leads to the acknowledgment of virtue (punya) and sin (papa), establishing firm understanding (dharana).

When one critically examines and arrives at clarity (tanthee), it fosters unshakable conviction. A person with such certainty, who has discerned the truth, is fearless and free from delusion. Accepting human wisdom does not mean denying divine principles, but recognizing the greater truths they represent.

A powerful example of conviction is seen in our revered teacher, Srividyamanayatirtha. When someone complained, “I am being troubled; this happened, and that happened,” he would calmly reply, “Why worry? Their virtue has come to you, and your sin has gone to them.” Such conviction, rooted in the principle of karma, eliminates anxiety. It aligns with the philosophy of the saint-poets who proclaimed, “Critics must exist…” (Nindakariyirabeku).

The profound meaning of “Dheerastatra na muhyati” (the wise do not delude themselves) is well-explained by Srimadacharya. Lord Krishna similarly advises Arjuna, “If you have doubts about the afterlife or attachment to the body, relinquish both.” Such clarity leads to unwavering faith and peace of mind.
