Mumbai: BJP President Amit Shah today justified his party’s move to form governments in Goa and Manipur, where the just-held assembly polls threw up fractured mandates.
Rejecting allegations that the BJP made a back door entry to power in Goa and Manipur, Shah said the saffron outfit had polled the highest votes in these states, where the Congress failed to get a clear mandate.
“Goa and Manipur ended up with hung assemblies. In such cases, tradition has been that the party which has the support of maximum MLAs forms the government,” he said.
Shah was speaking at an interactive session at the India Today Conclave here tonight via video link. “The party which has the required numbers approaches the governor to form government. That’s what we did. In Goa, Congress did not approach the governor even after we did,” Shah added.
In both Goa and Manipur, the Congress emerged as the single largest party but could not cobble up majority to form governments.
