Drought Effect: Farmers Destroy 2,376 Acres of Sugarcane Crop in Dharwad District

Dharwad: Sugarcane growers in Dharwad district have destroyed their own 2376 acres of sugarcane crop in the last 15 days following acute water shortage. The sugarcane crop is highly depend upon water and absence of pre-monsoon showers, decline in underground water level have forced the farmers to burn the crop cultivated.
The under ground water level has declined to 630 feet in the district. The farmers were reluctant to see the crop being destroyed at their farmland due to severe drought condition. Meanwhile, 9860 hectares of sugarcane crop in Dharwad district followed by 7697 hectares in Uttara Kannada district and 6850 hectares of sugarcane crop in Belagavi is under threat following severe water scarcity.
