Karnataka May Approach Apex Court on Control Over Cattle Trade: Minister

Bengaluru: Karnataka state Minister for Animal Husbandry and Sericulture A Manju said, Karnataka government may approach the Apex Court, if the union government continues with its latest notification on the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Regulation of Livestock Markets) Rules, 2017. The minister noted that, the centre didn’t approach any state government before issuing the notice on the matter.

A Manju said, the matter would be raised in a state cabinet meeting to discuss its negative as well as positive outcomes and subsequently the state government would request the central government to withdraw the notification issued. If the centre rejects the request, then the state would approach Supreme Court for a legal battle with the union government on the issue.

Speaking on the notification the minister opined, the bill is anti farmer and contradicts the cow slaughter and cattle preservation act, 1964. According to the notification, the sellers and buyers in the open market should get necessary permission from the authority to sale or purchase the cattle. This could create issues within the farmers community, the minister said.
