Bengaluru: Good rainfall during the past two weeks has changed the entire picture of Karnataka state as the number of taluks with severe water scarcity is expected to come down following recent monsoon showers. Last month, there was a high possibility for a severe water shortage in 160 taluks during current and next calendar year (2017 and 2018 calendar year). However, good rainfall activities during August and September months have reduced the risk of water shortage to some extent.

As of now, 36 taluks out of total 176 taluks of the state have received less than average rainfall where 48 taluks witnessed higher than average showers in the present season. Meanwhile, remaining 91 taluks have recorded average rainfall and have built confidence among the farmers to cultivate more.

In coastal Karnataka, Belthangady, Bantwal, Sullia taluks have recorded less than average rainfall where as Haliyala in Uttara Kannada has witnessed the same trend. Also, less than normal rainfall recorded in all taluks of Dharwad and Kodagu districts in the present season.

State revenue department prepares the list of drought hit taluks based on the rainfall recorded during June to September period. Revenue department noted that as many as 37 taluks have recorded less than average rainfall until September 14 and it will prepare a list of drought hit taluks once monsoon season concludes in the present calendar year.
