Agartala:  A mob gheraoed a police station and tried to set free a man arrested on abduction charges in West district of Tripura following which police fired in the air and used batons to quell them, the police said today.

The mob demanded release of a 26-year-old tribal man Balendra Debbarma soon after he was arrested yesterday in connection with an alleged abduction of a car driver on September 20.

Police used lathis and burst tear gas shells before opening fire in the air to disperse the crowd, Superintendent of Police Avijit Saptarshi told PTI. The administration suspended Internet services in the state for 24 hours from 6.30 pm last evening to prevent spread of rumours, he said.
