Madikeri: Thousands of devotees flocked to Talacauvery in Kodagu district early on Monday to witness Cauvery Theerthodbhava.
The Cauvery Theerthodbhava, an annual ritual to mark the gushing of water from a spring in a tank in Talacauvery, considered to be the source of river Cauvery, draws devotees from not only Kodagu, Mysuru, Chamarajanagar and Mandya, but also neighbouring Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
The priests chanted holy Mantras sitting in a row near Cauvery Brahmakundike and performed rituals for more than three hours. They sprinkled holy water on devotees, soon after the Theerthodbhava.
Devotees gathered near Brahmakundike at as early as 9 pm and started shouting ‘Jai Jai Maatha Cauvery matha,’ ‘Cauveramma kaapadamma,’ ‘Cauverammana padaravindakke Govinda Govinda’.
As soon as the Theerthodbava occurred, the devotees rushed to collect the holy water. Pinda Pradhana (offering respects to departed souls), Kesha Mudi (offering hair) were offered in the morning at Triveni Sangama, the confluence of River Cauvery, Kannika and Sujyothi at Bhagamandala.
