Screening for Diabetes in Women Should be Made Mandatory: Dr H S Ballal

Manipal: Manipal University Pro Chancellor, Dr H S Ballal, inaugurated the ‘Diabetes Awareness and Screening Programme which held at the Dr T M A Pai Hall here on Saturday. A poster exhibition was also held simultaneously to create awareness on diabetes which was inaugurated by Dr Pragna Rao Dean – KMC Manipal. The theme for the screening and poster exhibition was ‘women and diabetes – our right to a healthy future’.
Inaugurating the conference Dr H S Ballal said, “the incidence of diabetes among women is now found to be same as their male counterparts. But its identification through medical screening, regular medical treatment and follow up by women is largely neglected. This has serious impact on their health and even on their lives. Hence screening for diabetes and Gestational Diabetes Mellitus should be made mandatory and is essentials to be integrated at all levels of healthcare for women, especially pregnant women.”
Dr (Col) M Dayananda, Dr Manjunath Hande-Head of Department of General Medicine, Dr Shivashankar Unit Head Dept of General Medicine, Dr Avinash Shetty Deputy Medical Superintendent and Ln (Dr) Ganesh Pai and Ln Satish Chandra Secretary from the Lions Club Manipal were present on the occasion.
The Awareness and Educational Poster Exhibition was organized in association with the Manipal College of Nursing, Manipal and other clinical departments contributed various aspects of preventive and care messages for the society, with special emphasis on women.
