IT detects Rs 65-crore tax evasion in hair export

Bengaluru: A unique case of tax evasion by the Income Tax Department has detected income of Rs 65 crore earned by exporting human hairs to countries in Africa and Europe.

The undisclosed income belonged to a north- Karnataka based exporter and dealer of human hair. It included the hair offered by devotees in temples and cut in beauty parlours. The identity of the exporter couldn’t be identified by the department.

IT also seized Rs. 2.5 crores worth of jewellery and 140 kg of silver articles in the residence and office of the exporter.

The department also discovered that the exporter purchased human hair from beauty parlours from all around the state. Few girls from the hostel also sold their hair to earn some extra money.

Further investigation is in progress.
