Tumakuru: The leopard which remained trapped for hours in a house in Tumakuru town was captured at 6 pm on Saturday.

The superintendent of police Divya Gopinath informed over the phone that the leopard was rescued and captured buy the forest department officials calming it at around 6 pm after 9 hours after it was trapped in the house. The leopard may have entered the town in search of food and entered the house of Ramaswamy in Jayanagar colony.

The family members, including Ramaswamy ran out of the house from the back door feared by the presence of the wild cat. But Ramaswamy’s wife Vanajakshi and daughter Vinutha rushed to the bathroom and locked themselves. They were rescued in the afternoon by fire brigade men after breaking the bathroom ventilator’s grill.

Even as hundreds of curious onlookers gathered outside, the leopard remained hidden in the house. Deputy Commissioner Mohan Raj informed the forest department officials to rush in experts with a net to the house and tranquilizer guns. Efforts were made to locate the leopard in the house. The wild cat was spotted in the kitchen and the experts threw water on the animal to make it flee outside the house. Once the leopard tried to flee outside, the experts shot it with a tranquilizer and made it unconscious. The leopard was then brought out and captured.

The leopard is said to be taken to Bannerghatta National Park in Bengaluru at night.
