New Delhi: The government withdrew recognition of over 130 teacher training institutions in 2016 -17 for not following norms and standards, the Rajya Sabha was informed today.

“During the academic session 2016-17, the NCTE had withdrawn recognition of 133 institutions offering various teacher education programmes for not following the guidelines stipulated in the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) Act, rules, norms and standards,” Minister of State for Human Resource Development (HRD) Upendra Kushwaha said in his response to a written question.

While no Delhi institute figured in the list, the maximum number of institutions whose recognition was withdrawn were in Karnataka (29) followed by Maharashtra (28), Tamil Nadu (20) and Madhya Pradesh (17).

Concerned over the quality of the teacher training institutions, the Centre had last year announced that no new BEd college will be allowed in the country for a year. Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar had then observed that BEd colleges were opening like “fly by night operators”.
