The workout for state legislative assembly has begun. May 12th has been fixed as the date for voting. Political fever has increased in coastal Karnataka. All political parties are indulged in promoting themselves. Why are we talking about politics? In coastal Karnataka there is a link between politics and cinema.
Many representatives of the people from coastal Karnataka have not only played their parts in politics but also shined in cinema. They have attracted attention through acting or producing in Kannada/Tulu film industries. Former MLA Lokayya Shetty acted in the first Tulu film “Enna Tangadi” which was released in 1971. The then MLA Amarnath Shetty acted in the third Tulu movie “Pagetha Puge” which released in 1972 and was directed by Aruru Pattabhi.
MLA Shakuntala Shetty played the leading role in 2011 Kumbra Raghunath Rai’s movie “Kanchilda Bale” which depicted the tradition of spirit worship. Former minister Abhayachandra Jain has acted in Tajashekar Kotian’s film “Brahmashri Narayana Guru Swamy”. In this same movie and the recent eleases including “Chaali Polilu” and “Ekka Saka” saw the acting of BJP’s Umanath Kotian.
Jagadish Adhikari too has been seen in the movie. Belthangady MLA Vasant Kumar Bangera produced the 1978 Tulu movie “Sangama Sakshi”. The 2006 release “Kadala Mage” was produced by Sadhana N. Shetty and former district in-charge minister Nagaraja Shetty. “September 8” movie directed by Dr. Richard Castelino was graced by the acting of Dr. Shivaram Karanth, who was contesting from Karwar constituency.
The present minister for women and child development, Umashree has also acted in “September 8” film. The current district in-charge minister B. Ramanath Rai acted a small part in the 1972 movie “Makkala Bhagya”.
Former chief minister and current MP M. Veerappa Moily’s story “Sagaradeepa” has been converted into a movie. When D.V. Sadananda Gowda was the chief minister he acted as the chief minister itself in the movie “Chellapilli” which was directed by Sai Kudla and produced by Sudesh Bhandary. Another specialty is that those who acted in these Tulu movies have also made their name politically.
The 1973 Tulu release “Kasdaye Kandani”, “Yaan Sanyasi Aape” and “Bayyamallige” of 1974 introduced Jayamala from coastal Karnataka and took her to Sandalwood industry from where she was also witnessed in the political arena. Bhavana acted in the Tulu movie “Maaribale” and is currently in politics. BJP’s Tara shined in the 1194 Tulu release “Badkede Bale”.
“Dagalbaajilu” is ready
Coastalwood’s most expected movie “Dagalbaajilu” which is produced by Santosh Shetty and directed by A. S. Prashant, is done with shooting and is getting ready for release. The music has been produced by R. D. Verman Sandesh Babu and K. M. Vishnuvardhan is the cinematographer. The story and screenplay has been done by Suresh Anchan.
