Woman tries to commit suicide opposing eviction drive

Karwar: A lady from local fishing community attempted to commit suicide after the local taluk administration endeavored to evacuate a temporary hutment in the region on April 20.
Kusuma Kudtalkar (45) splashed kerosene all over her body and endeavored to immolate self, when taluk administration authorities attempted to clear five huts on the sea shore. She was immediately taken to hospital and later discharged.
The fishing community has been utilizing the zone for drying fish, repairing fishing nets and other related activities. The local taluk administration has been making rehashed endeavors to drive people away from the zone. Temporary hutments are raised in the blink of an eye after each eviction drive, said authorities amid the eviction drive.
The people in the region have blamed the administration for executing their job and killing their livelihood for development and tourism by infringing upon their region.
Limitations ought to be forced on Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) experts, who are busy constructing large permanent structures causing severe damage to environment in the area, they said.
