Fire brigade ready to face monsoon challenge

Mangaluru: The fire brigade plays a prominent role in handling natural calamities and tragedies during monsoon season and Mangaluru fire brigade is well prepared for this.

The district has 7 fire brigades with a total of 150 officers and staff providing their service. There is one fire brigade per taluk, while Mangaluru city has two stations (Pandeshwar and Kadri) and one in Moodbidri.

Every fire station has two fire engines and Mangaluru has three fire engines. They are equipped with portable pumps to pump out water, rescue vehicles in the city, one boat each, rope, life buoy, life jacket and Aska lights (Portable Inflatable Emergency Lighting System).

The fire brigade works in close contact with the district administration and based on the information provided by the district administration, they take precautionary measures at necessary places.

In the case of floods, steps have been taken to relocate people residing along the banks of the river and low lying areas. Preparations have been done to pump out water filled within houses and buildings, informed Chief Fire Officer, T.N.Shivshankar.

Important action has been taken to remove trees fallen on houses, buildings, roads and electric lines and thus protect the people and maintain the smooth flow of the traffic system.

The officers and staff of the various fire brigade divisions have been intimated to be ready to face any situation and to give their service even on their holiday if need be.

Though there is enough man force in all the stations, during the time of an emergency, the stations have been intimated to take assistance from neighbouring stations.

People will provide cooperation

People and police provide information to the department. Officers will make haste to the location where a tragedy has taken place, judge the requirements of the situation and if necessary take assistance from the people, institutions and the police.

Ariel ladder platform

The department has procured “Ariel ladder platform” which is a latest form of equipment used to handle tragedies occurring on multi-storied buildings. With the help of this equipment, rescue operations can be carried at the height of 32 meters.

Warning Message

“Warning message on the cyclone have been coming from often, from the district administration for the last three months. When such messages come, the station officer and staff is sent with the vehicle, especially to Ullal and Someshwara beaches. Already, our officers have visited these locations and carried precautionary actions here. The district administration has already conducted a meeting. There will be another meeting conducted on Monday,” informed T.N.Shivshankar, chief fire officer, Mangaluru division.
