Senior athlete Jyothi Shetty no more

Udupi: Senior athlete Jyothi Shetty (50) passed away a day after meeting with an accident near Ambagilu on Saturday June 9th. Jyothi is survived by her husband Uday Shetty, a son and a daughter.

Jyothi was riding pillion with her brother when the accident took place, Jyothi sustained grievous head injuries and was rushed to the hospital. However, she succumbed to her injuries on Sunday June 10th.

It is understood that on Saturday, Jyothi received a call from an acquaintance that he had met with an accident at Ambagilu. Jyothi along with her brother rushed to his help and took him to hospital. However, on their way back home, the motorcycle being driven by her brother skidded resulting in Jyothi incurring severe head injuries due to the fall.

Jyothi Shetty was an international athlete and had won medals for her country. She was also the only senior athlete in Udupi who was still active in sports. In 2011, she bagged ten medals in the national events in running, long jump, high jump, shot put, hurdles and 100, 200, 400 and 800 meters relay thereby gaining international attention.

Last year she won two medals in Asia Masters Athletics Championships held in China. She finished at the eighth spot at the World Masters Athletics Championships held in Australia in 2016. She was scheduled to represent India again at the world championship to be held in September in Spain.
