Belthangady: Medicinal plants will bloom in the premises of various schools in D.K. district. Comprehensive knowledge on herbal plants will be available to the children within their sights. The ZP COO has already passed an order to all the related GP’s to create herbal gardens at various government schools under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme to develop herbal gardens. This is a special attempt to protect herbal plants.

GP’s will be initiating this work in association with the forest department. The format on how to form the herbal garden will be approved and decided upon at a special village meeting.

45 schools in the district

In D.K. district, altogether 45 government schools have been identified for the creation of the herbal gardens. Of these schools 7 are in Bantwal, 5 in Sullia and 8 in Puttur. The director of public education department submitted the proposal to develop herbal gardens at government schools.

The Places

The schools included in this project include government model higher primary school at Punjalakatte, Bangadi, Badanaje, Saralikatte, Charmadi, Andinje, Koranja, Naravi, Navuru, Bajere, Badaga Karanduru, Karambaru, Mundaje, Kalenje, Kanyadi-2, Kokkada, Totattadi, Machhina, Padangadi, Nittade, Paddonddka, Kuvettu, Bandaru, Pili Chandikallu, Perinje government school andamny more schools totaling to up to 25 schools which have been selected to create herbal gardens under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme.

Why?

This initiative will fulfill the need to sensitize the people on the generally available and used herbal plants and to pass on the information of traditional medicine to the future generation. These herbal gardens will be created at the empty places in the premises of the schools.

Good experiment

“Different species of plants will be planted in the school area close to one acre. This is a good experiment,” observed Sharmila B. Headmistress.

Inauguration on July 7th

On July 7th, the first herbal garden in the taluk will be inaugurated at the government high school at Nada. Many plants have been brought from Pilikula and planted at Nada School. There should be proper water facility and availability of space while going as per the action plan. It’s even better if the GP can provide workers with job cards. The school administration must take responsibility for protection and taking care,” said Ganesh Tantri, forest officer, Belthangady.
