Karnataka to release 31 tmcft water to TN

Bengaluru/New Delhi: The Cauvery Water Management Authority, which held its first meeting on Monday in the midst of reports of Karnataka intending to claim in the Supreme Court against its formation, guided Karnataka to discharge around 31 tmcft water to Tamil Nadu in July. 

Central Water Commission (CWC) and CWMA Chairman S. Masood Husain told the media after the media “The quantum of water which has been in the council grant after modifying whatever has been the surplus in the long stretch of June that would be discharged by Karnataka,” 

According to the court’s order, the provisional monthly conveyances amid a normal year show 34 tmcft water to be discharged to Tamil Nadu in July. Authorities at CWC inform that the overabundance water got by Tamil Nadu in June because of good rainstorm was abundance by more than 3 tmcft. 

Husain said the main meeting of the authority was held in a “cordial environment” and it marked a historic moment after an extensive stretch of litigation. The meeting was attended by all the four party states – Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry. 

In the nine-part CWMA led by CWC Chairman, Karnataka is represented by its Principal Secretary, Water Resources, Rakesh Singh and Tamil Nadu government by Principal Secretary, Public Works Department, S.K. Prabakar. Kerala Water Resources Secretary Tinku Biswal and Puducherry Development Commissioner-cum-PWD Secretary A. Anbarasu. 

On whether Karnataka will take after the CWMA’s course, Husain said he is hopeful that all party states will collaborate in the implementation of the council award. Passing by the consultation at the meeting on Monday, he said he is completely certain about regards to the award’s implementation. 

“This is the decision of the authority and as the monsoon has been normal, we trust the reservoirs in Karnataka would get the typical inflow and we trust that Karnataka would have the capacity to discharge this amount. I don’t see any trouble from any side,” he said. 

The meeting talked about rules of business, required staff and structure, foundation like workplaces, the organization for keeping up information like inflow, surge, withdrawals, editing design, execution status of the court’s honor for June and acknowledgment at Biligundlu site on between state outskirt. 

“The authority guided Karnataka to guarantee the adjust amount for July 2018 at Biligundlu altering the abundance amount of water acknowledged by Tamil Nadu at Biligundlu in June 2018 subject to the appraisal and suggestion by the direction board of trustees.” the Chairman said. 

While the authority is yet to choose the date for its next meeting, the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) will meet on Thursday (July 5) to investigate whatever the command it has been doled out and the issues alluded to the board of trustees by the expert. 

Husain said that according to the journal warning, the workplace of the expert will be set up in Delhi and for this, the specialist has wanted to approach the Union Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Ministry for a different office for the expert. 

“This was the primary gathering and we were more centered around making the principles of business. Thinking about the states’ spirit of participation at the meeting, I trust another era of water collaboration has begun in the nation,” he said.
