Mangaluru: The district has been ranked 29th in terms of people adopting family planning and there is a need for more campaigning on family planning in the district, said M.R. Ravi, Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer on Wednesday.

Mr. Ravi spoke at the Population Day programme held at the Town Hall and said that Dakshina Kannada placed on the 29th position was a sad sight for a literate district. “This is not the ranking for a progressive district. The district fared poorly in terms of men coming forward for vasectomy,” he informed.

Last year, only 23 men came forward for vasectomy in the entire district.  It was important to make people realize the importance of family planning, said Mr. Ravi.

As the population keeps increasing, there is a lack of land. Having more number of awareness programmes that will help an individual in taking a decision on family planning, he stressed.

MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, inaugurated the programme and said that it was important to have family planning awareness programmes in the rural parts of the district. The development of the state and the country is affected by the increase in population.

Prizes were given to Asha workers who were successful in implementing birth control measures in their area including Asha of Kadaba PHC, Shashiprabha of Panjikallu and Pushpalatha of Vamadapadavu. Sujatha, V V Annamma and Jayalakshmi were also given prizes as the best health assistants at the district level.
