Child labourers rescued from jewelry making unit

Udupi: Following complaints from the locals, the Department of Labour and the Department of Women and Child Welfare Udupi officials rescued four child labourers on Wednesday July 18th.
The rescued children hail from West Bengal and were illegally employed as goldsmiths in a building near Chittaranjan Circle in Udupi and have been sent to the custody of district child welfare committee.
The raid, carried out by Ramamurthy SS, labour inspector, Prabhakar Acharya, director of women and child welfare committee, Praveen Kumar, labour department official and the team, revealed that more than 15 people from West Bengal were running the business here without trade license.
The chemicals used to melt gold are dangerous and prolonged exposure to it can severely affect the children’s health.
