Mangaluru: “There is possibility that lynching an attacks similar to those taking place in North India will start in Dakshina Kannasa also if the police shows negligence in the matter of ‘Gau Raksha Dal’. The police department needs to take immediate action and prevent such happenings,” said Athaullah Jokatte, district president of SDPI in a press release.

Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) Dakshina Kannada district committee has urged the district and city police department to wake up on the announcement of the formation of ‘Gau Raksha Dal’ given by Jagadish Shenava, district president of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP).

“This is a clear indication of starting mob assault in the name of protection of cows by the leaders of VHP, who have expressed doubts on the honesty and dedication of the police officers. The concerned officers have to monitor this issue. The police department and the district administration has to form special teams in order to prevent the attacks in the name of cow protection by keeping a tab on the movements of these organizations,” urged Athaullah.

Formation of ‘Go Raksha Dal’opposed by Meat Traders’ Association

Ali Hassan, president of Mangaluru Meat Traders’ Association, said “The statement given by VHP with regards to the formation of ‘Gau Raksha Dal’ is ridiculous. People, who love cows, know very well as to how and who should protect the cows. In this background, it is not right to divide the people of Dakshina Kannada, which is a peaceful district. The attempt to sow poison in the wake of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections is condemnable. If an attempt is made as a challenge to the police department, then police have to take stringent action.”

Gau Raksha Dal

On July 21st, VHP leader Jagadish Shenava spoke on behalf of Bajarang Dal and said that the district police have utterly failed to control the cattle thieves and functioning of illegal cow slaughtering centres since, of late, cattle theft has become a common thing in the district. Hence, the failure of police has forced them to take care of the protection of cattle and its owners, he claimed.

He said that the situation had gone from bad to worse and that they had lost faith in the police. Hence, as an immediate measure, they were going to form ‘Gau Raksha Dal’ in every village of Dakshina Kannada (DK) district. Each unit will have 15 to 20 members and they will patrol their respected areas.
