Bengaluru: After the Karnataka High Court rapped the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on the issue on illegal hoardings in the city, the BBMP swung into action and seized 18,820 kgs of flex material from all eight zones in one day.
Of the total seized materials, 780 kg were seized from the West zone, 8500 kg from the East zone, 260 kg from Mahadevpura zone, 2000 kg from Yelahanka zone, 5000 kg from Bommanahalli zone, 80 kg from the south zone and 2200 kg from Dasarahalli zone.
Palike officials raided flex banners printing shops at Binnypet and Mahadevapura and seized all materials. A fine of Rs 92,000 was collected from all seizures by the palike.
BBMP officials and civic workers assaulted
Earlier, a BBMP Assistant Revenue Officer and several other civic workers were assaulted while taking down flex banners near Tin Factory. Consequently, Karnataka high court questioned both the Police Commissioner and BBMP officials for allowing “hooliganism” to prevail in the city.
“The incident is an insult to the institution. The Police Commissioner will be held responsible if any such incident is repeated or a single flex erected after the removal of the existing banner,” observed Chief Justice Maheshwari.
4 arrested
Hours after Bengaluru Police Commissioner Suneel Kumar was summoned by the High Court, the police arrested four persons in connection with the crime. The accused have been identified as Rajendra, Simson, Kamalnath and Surya. FIR for assault, rioting and common intention has been registered against the four at Ramamurthy Nagar police station.
