Udupi: Women and Child Development Minister Dr. Jayamala who is also the newly appointed district in-charge minister made her maiden visit to the district since taking up the post on Sunday, August 5th.

The minister first visited the famous Sri Krishna temple to seek blessings from Lord Krishna and Palimaru Mutt Seer. She later came to the Circuit at Bannanje and was greeted there by the former MLA Pramod Madhwara, former Kaup MLA Vinay Kumar Sorake, Deputy Commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis and by other Congress and JD(S) leaders.

“It is not a challenge. Everyone should work together so that government programmes reach people. The BJP MLA’s have the same responsibility. Political leaders are the servant of public. No one can escape from this responsibility,” she said replying to a question on how challenging it was to communicate with the five BJP MLA’s in the district.

The minister clarified on the rumours about dropping the Matru Poorna Yojana and said that no one can stop this scheme, because it is a central government programme and was meant to meet the nutritional needs of pregnant and lactating women in rural areas.

“We cannot see poverty in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Kodagu and Ramnagar. It is a very successful scheme in 26 districts of Karnataka. The meals provided under the scheme will meet 40-45% of the daily calorie, protein and calcium requirement of the pregnant and lactating mothers. They are given Rs 1,800,” she informed.

Regarding the crime rate increase in the district with the three murders and one unnatural death in a very short span of time she said that all cases were being investigated and the police department was doing their duty. She refused to comment more on the issue.
