Bengaluru: Karnataka High Court cancelled the transfer of the Mahabaleshwara Temple in Gokarna to the Ramachandrapura Mutt on Friday, August 10th. a public interest litigation (PIL) had been filed challenging the BS Yeddyurappa government’s decision of transferring the temple to the Havyaka Brahmin Mutt in 2008.
The PIL which was heard by the division bench of the High Court was filed by Balachandra Dixit and Narahari Krishna Hegde. Earlier, the temple was being administered by the State’s Endowment Department and it was dropped from the list to facilitate the transfer.
In its 252-page judgement, the HC said that the government was wrong in dropping the temple from the list of temples administered by the department. The Court directed the immediate appointment of an administrative body to run the temple and the deputy commissioner of the district will head the administrative body.
