New Delhi/Bengaluru: The Mahadayi Water Dispute Tribunal(MWDT) submitted its final recommendation to the Ministry of Water Resources today.
The tribunal was constituted to settle the disputed Mahadayi river water sharing among Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra. The tribunal was formed in 2011 and is headed by Justice J M Panchal.
On Tuesday, the tribunal submitted its final order to the government and will give details of the award to party states by evening. The content of the final order is yet to be disclosed.
In its interim award, MWDT earlier had rejected Karnataka’s plea to utilise 7.5 tmcft of water for drinking purposes in Hubballi- Dharwad, Belagavi and Gadag districts in 2016
There was a dispute between Goa and Karnataka on diverting the river water. While Karnataka sought the tribunal’s green signal for the Kalasa-Banduri project, arguing that the river must be used for drinking purposes instead of letting it out into the sea, Goa said that it is water-deficient and sharing any water with Karnataka would cause ecological damage to the state.
More details awaited
