  • Deceased sent back from two government hospitals claimimg lack of facilities
  • Brother of the deceased also died due to similar reasons

Udupi: Because of non-availability of medical facilities in two government hospitals, a poor man belonging to Dalit community, died on Tuesday, August 14th. The deceased has been identified as Bhaskar (36), a resident of Perampally, Gerukatte and a mason by profession.

According to the available information, Bhaskar developed some urine complications on Tuesday and went to Ajjarakad Government Hospital. But, the staff at this hospital informed him that they do not have the facility to treat and hence sent him to Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru.

However, at Wenlock Hospital, the staff claimed that t there was no place in Intensive Care Unit (ICU). As the poor people could not afford well-equipped private hospitals in Mangaluru they decided to return to Udupi, but en-route Bhaskar succumbed to his condition. His funeral was held on Wednesday.

Two years back, Bhaskar’s brother Harish also had died of non-availability of proper treatment at Ajjarakad hospital.

20 families

There are 20 dalit families that reside at Perampally, Gerukatte living in abject poverty and without any propoer documentation for their houses. Bhaskar died just because he was poor and hence no one came to his rescue, say the residents of Perampallu, Gerukatte. It is also said that Bhaskar had to be taken in a private ambulance to Mangaluru and back as government ambulance was not available.

People have given a complaint on the incident to the assistant deputy commissioner.
