- Heavy vehicles passing through despite the ban giving scope to corruption
Belthangady: Despite the ban on movement of heavy vehicles along Charmadi Ghat, heavy vehicles still pass without any hindrance.
On August 17th, Dakshina Kannada (D.K.) Deputy Commissioner had banned heavy vehicle movement along Charmadi Ghat, which presently is the only Ghat road connecting with Karavali. Chikmagalur DC too had issued the same order on August 18th. But, even though it’s been a week since, heavy vehicle passage has not stopped.
There is a strong accusation being heard that the Charmadi check post staff allow the heavy vehicles to pass since the later pays up for the usual. Somewhere from Rs. 500 to Rs. 2,000 is being coughed up accuse the localites.
Complaints in this regard have been submitted to Belthangady Taluk administration. Related persons have been informed to stop heavy vehicles attempting to enter the Ghat through Guruvayanakere-Uppinangady and at the spot along B.C. Road which connects with Charmadi, said Belthangady Tashildar.
The heavy vehicles passing through even after the ban on their movement is only giving more scope to corruption. But we have no evidence to take action. We have submitted complaints in this regard to the DP and Additional SP too. There is complaint that there are more heavy vehicles coming from Chikmagaluru side, informed the tahsildar.
Complaints have come in this regard. Though there is a ban, a few food transporting vehicles pass through. Our staff will not be there at the check post during daylight. Home guard staff will be there. But we do not have any information on bribes, said Belthangady traffic police station SI Odiyappa Gowda.
