  • Landslides between Kodagaravalli and Yedakumeri stations

Karwar: The only available train service between Bengaluru and Karwar that was being operated via Tirupathur, Palakkad and Shoranur has been cancelled by the South Westrern Railway (SWR) till September 1st.

Following multiple landslips along Shiradi Ghat, the Bengaluru-Karwar-Kannu train service was diverted and run via Shravanabelagola four days a week and via Mysuru three days a week. The same reason also forced SWR to cancel the tri-weekly day train services between Yeshwantpur-Mangaluru Junction and Yeshwantpur-Karwar.

On Monday, landslide had occured  between Kodagaravalli and Yedakumeri stations. On Tuesday, another landslide happened. In these two incidents, a total of 75,000 cubic metres of earth has formed two huge heaps on the railway tracks, said chief public relations officer of south western railway, E Vijaya.

SWR was facing crew shortage as well as path in the aftermath of floods in Kerala. Though the trains were running on the diverted route, they had good occupancy rate as road networks remained severed, she added.

Half of the crew in Kerala were in relief camps and hence, the zone was unable to provide the required crew to operate the diverted trains. Once they come back, say within a week, Southern Railway could accommodate the trains, informed Southern Railway’s Chief Operations Manager S. Anantharaman.
