Hollywood star Burt Reynolds, best known for his roles in Deliverance and Boogie Nights, died on Thursday (September 6).

The 82-year-old actor, who was a huge box office attraction in the 1970s, died at a hospital in Florida, his manager Erik Kritzer told the Hollywood Reporter. He had suffered a cardiac arrest.

Reynold’s roles varied from the tough-guy act to comedy, most notably in his role as David Dilbeck in the 1996 film, Striptease, which flopped at the box office, but earned him praise and accolades for his comedic prowess.

He had also tried his hand at directing. He later founded the Burt Reynolds Institute for Film & Theatre in Florida. Tributes poured in from all quarters, and many prominent Hollywood celebrities expressed their grief.

“There are times in your life that are so indelible, they never fade away. They stay alive, even forty years later. My years with Burt never leave my mind,” said actress Sally Field, whom Reynolds once called “the love of his life.” “He will be in my history and my heart, for as long as I live. Rest, Buddy.”

Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds also shared a small tribute to the actor on his Instagram account.
