Mangaluru: A call for Bharath bandh, to protest rising fuel prices evoked a good response in the Dakshina Kannada district.
Several shops, establishments, hotels etc, remained closed on Monday, September 10 to extend their support towards the protest, while others were forcibly closed by the protestors. The most-affected were commuters since most of the transport unions had supported the bandh and barring a few vehicles the roads bore a deserted look throughout the day.
Mangaluru South MLA Vedavyas Kamath, after noticing the difficulties faced by passengers stranded at KSRTC bus, Hampankatta old bus stand, railway station etc made arrangements to serve them free food and drinking water. The MLA himself was seen distributing rice and water bottles to stranded passengers at KSRTC bus stand in Bejai here.
Speaking to media persons Vedavyas alleged that the Congress misused the administrative machinery during the bandh. “Protestors pelted stones at hotels and forced them to shut shops, thus affecting commoners. I have done my duty as an MLA by meeting the necessity of the people,” he said.
