Two youth attack veteran international athlete Sulatha Kamath

Udupi: Two young men have brutally attacked Katapady Sulatha Kamath, a veteran athlete of international repute. Sulatha, who was seriously injured, was admitted into a hospital here. The two youth who attacked the athlete have been identified as Charan Kunder and Deekshith.
Sulatha runs a tea stall in front of her home which she operated late into the night. As per usual, she had closed her stall retired for the night inside her home. On Saturday, around 3:30 am, someone came near the gate of her compound and sounded it. After the family woke up to the noise, the duo demanded tea and omelette. However, the family politely refused to accede to their request which only angered the duo who barged into the compound.
Of the accused duo, Charan Kunder picked up a piece of stone from the ground and smashed it against Sulatha’s face, badly injuring her in the process. The other accused, Deekshith, attacked her with his hands. The sound alerted Sulatha’s husband, son and daughter who rushed out of the house. Seeing them the duo used foul language against them and gave them death threats.
With presence of mind, the daughter immediately called the police. The police on night patrol duty immediately came there and arrested the accused. It is learnt that Sulatha’s nose bone was fractured. Kaup police have registered a case in this regard.
Katpadi Sulatha Kamath has bagged several medals in the sports meets meant for veterans in marathon walks and races.
