Officials given 1-mth deadline to complete Urwa Market work

Mangaluru: Minister for Urban Development and Housing U T Khader on Monday, September 17 directed officials of the Mangaluru Urban Development Authority to speedily execute pending works at the six-storeyed market-cum-commercial complex at Urwa Market and set a one-month deadline for the same.

He assured the people that the facility, being built at the cost of Rs 10.5 crore, will be ready by end of October after inspecting the works at the premises here.

During Khader’s visit, fisherfolk complained to him of lack of adequate space to accommodate all the fish vendors. The current space at the market complex can accommodate 15 sellers, while there are around 45 sellers in the market, they informed Khader.

The minister asked MUDA Commissioner K. Srikanth Rao to address the issue by making use of adjoining land of Mangaluru City Corporation.

Speaking to media persons here Khader said that the state government has proposed to construct a new market building at Kadri at the cost of Rs 12 crore and Kankanady market at the cost of Rs 41 crore. A new market will be built at Urwa Store at a cost of Rs 35 crore.

The minister further said that the Central Market, which was to be developed under the PPP model would now be developed under the Smart City project.

Mayor Bhaskar K, Deputy Mayor Muhammad K, MCC Council Whip Shashidhar Hegde, corporator Pravinchandra Alva, MUDA Commissioner Srikanth Rao and MCC Commissioner B A Mohammed Nazir were present.
