Udupi: Women and Child Welfare Minister Jayamala was put in an embarrassing spot as peeved Congress workers gheraoed the district in-charge minister questioning her reluctance to take a stand or any action against the police lathi charge incident that occurred during the Bharat Bandh on September 10.
Jayamala was visiting the district to participate in a programme organised on the occasion of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi at the Congress Bhavan here on Tuesday. Immediately after the programme, when Jayamala was about to leave the party office, Youth Congress workers, including municipal councillor Ramesh Kanchan gheraoed her and confronted her over the issue.
The workers even accused her of not having the courtesy to visit or inquire about the health of those party workers who were hospitalised in the incident. They were demanded that Superintendent of Police Laxman Nimbargi be transferred immediately.
Responding to the sudden development, the Minister said that she had spoken to the SP over the phone as soon as she came to know about the issue. She later warned the party workers not to create a scene as the media was covering the incident and left the venue in a hurry.
