Physics surrounds us everywhere and is part of our daily lives. Physics is a form of basic science and there is great scope in taking it as a career. Here is an interview with Dr Ishwar Bhat, Associate Professor, Department of Physics, St Aloysius College (Autonomous) Mangaluru, on the subject of physics and its scope.

How is the importance of physics in competitive exams? Do you feel if any changes are required? If yes, what do you suggest?

The importance of physics in competitive exams is good. There is an opportunity to do research at big institutions. The students too are showing noticeable accomplishment in the entrance exams.

What is the similarity between our daily lives and physics?

Physics is a form of basic science. Anything that happens in this world occurs as per the rules of physics. The basic science behind the motion of any object or release of energy from an object is physics. If the motions fail to occur, we will lose the normalcy of our daily lives.

What is the importance of physics in the present technology based world?

There is a greater need for the study of physics in the field of technology. Physics is a basic science in itself and different forms of energies have emerged from it. As of now, India has achieved the most in this field. In the recent days, there is development in the field of technology. There is a requirement for the study in the basic science of physics.

How is the interest of students in the learning physics? Do you feel a change is required in the curriculum of physics?

The students’ interest in learning physics is good. Importantly, students who are interested in learning physics must be selected. Since the basic physics is taught effectively, it will be helpful for the students to study well in the future phases. There is a need for the government to bring much change in the curriculum of physics. Teachers, scientist, students must come together and share proper decisions for effective education.

How are the opportunities for the study of physics in the field of employment?

A student who has studied physics has an employment opportunity in various fields. They can work in the field of education, become scientists and provide for the society. There are many research centres in the country and there is a demand for students who have studied physics here.
