Kalaburgi: A 51-year-old physical education teacher of a government high school in Kalaburgi was arrested by the police on Friday on charges of sexual abuse and molestation of female students.

The accused, Basavaraj was arrested following a complaint filed by the Superintendent of a state-run Balamandira (orphanage). He has been charged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO) Act and Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The Child Welfare Committee has also registered a complaint against the teacher.

As per reports, Basavaraj had sexually assaulted four orphaned girls, studying at the school knowing very well that they had no families to back them up. The incident came to light when the girls confided in the SP of their hostel and told her what Basavaraj had done. The SP, in turn, approached the Child Protection Officer and upon his advice, she filed a complaint against the teacher at the Kalaburgi Women’s Police Station.

“Yesterday we got a complaint that four orphan girls, staying at the state juvenile home, were sexually abused and molested. Upon that, we have registered a complaint in a women police station and we have arrested the accused. The due course of law will follow in the investigation,” said Kalburagi Superintendent of Police Shashi Kumar.

Basavaraj was produced before the magistrate on Saturday and remanded to judicial custody
