Bengaluru: In a novel initiative aimed to inculcate environmental awareness among children, the state Forest Department has proposed to award grace marks to Class 10 students if they nourish atleast 10 saplings as part of a plantation drive.

Inaugurating an agro-forestry workshop at Kalaburgi earlier this week Forest, Ecology and Environment Minister R. Shankar informed that the proposal will be placed before the state government.

As per the proposal students of Class eight would be given ten saplings of mango, jackfruit, coconut tree etc. The students would be required to plant these saplings in the vicinity of their school, residence or the roadside and nurture it for a span of three years i.e. until he or she completes tenth standard.

The grace marks would be awarded to the students after the forest department inspects the growth of the saplings, he stated.
