District Wenlock hospital House surgeons, PG students’ stage stir demanding stipend

Mangaluru: The house surgeons and PG medical students staged a protest in front of Wenlock Hospital demanding stipend from the government, on Monday October 22nd.

Since 2017, house surgeons and PG studnets are entitled to stipend but have not received the same since the past eight months. The protestors allege that repeated appeal to the Chief Minister, Education Minister, Health Minister and other authorities have proved futile.

House surgeons are entitled to a monthly stipened of Rs 20,000 while the PG students should get Rs 30,000, Rs 35,000 and Rs 40,000 for the first, second and third year of their service respectively. Even though the government has sanctioned Rs 2.36 crore for their payment, the Department of Medical Education has failed to release it, allege the protestors.

Indefinite strike

Wenlock Superintendent Dr Rajeshwari Devi met the protestors and assured to bring their issues to the notice of the government. The protest was subsequently withdrawn but house surgeons have warned that if their demands were not met, they would launch an indefinite strike from November 1st by boycotting their service.
