Mangaluru: Six boats from Tamil Nadu, anchored on the banks of Nethravati at Kotepura near Ullal, have been seized by the department of fisheries, the coastal security force and the police here.

“The joint operation, conducted on Monday based on information from the local people, revealed that those in the boats did not have valid documents,” the police said.

Those in the boats were being interrogated, they added.

The police quoted the deputy director of the department of fisheries Chikkaveera Nayaka as saying that the officials had gone to Ullal after getting the information about the boats illegally anchored there.

In a statement, president of the Mangaluru Gillnet Association Ali Hassan said action would be taken against the guilty and asked the officials to treat the incident seriously and ensure that fishermen from coastal Karnataka did not face any harm.
