Bantwal:  Thieves broke into a Vittal-based journalist’s house located at Bobbekeri, Devasyabailu in broad daylight on Tuesday, October 23 and made off with jewellery worth lakhs.

The theft took place at the house, belonging to Vishnugupta Punacha alias Ramesh K when he and his wife had home out for work. It was only when the couple returned home in the evening that they came to know of the robbery.

Reportedly the thieves gained access into their house by breaking open a back door and ransacked the entire house. Cash worth Rs 65,000 and 18 gold sovereigns that had been kept in the cupboard have been stolen from the house.

The Vittal police personnel, upon receiving information about the theft arrived at the spot and conducted an inspection. A case has been registered in this regards.

The police suspect that the gang may have had prior knowledge that the house inmates were not at home and hence chose to target it. Meanwhile, locals informed the police that unidentified scrap dealers were seen roaming in the area since the past few days.
