Mangaluru: The Principal District and Sessions Judge Kadlur Sathyanarayanacharya on Tuesday sentenced a 23-year-old student to rigorous life imprisonment in connection with the brutal murder of his neighbour over a petty issue.

The convicted Chandrashekar P, a resident of Santhekatte in Beltangady was held guilty of murdering his neighbour Thimmappa Poojary, 58, who was a lineman with BSNL.

According to the charge-sheet, Chandrashekar was in the habit of feeding stray dogs and cats near his house and often these strays would relieve themselves in Thimmappa’s compound. A conflict arose between the two when Thimmappa objected to this, as he was forced to clean the poop of the animals near his compound.

On June 2, 2017 evening Chandrashekar had assaulted Thimmappa with a sickle when he had stepped out of his house to buy ice cream for his two young children. He even flashed the sword at Thimmappa’s wife Champavathi and the children, who rushed to the rescue of their father.

Post-mortem reports revealed that 21 injuries had been inflicted on Poojary’s body.

Belthangady Inspector Krishnaiah V, based on a complaint from Champavathi registered a murder case and subsequently filed a charge-sheet in the court.

During the trial, the report from Bengaluru-based Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) had revealed that the blood stains on the weapon and Chandrashekhar’s shirt had matched with the blood of the victim. The statement of the two children, recorded by the magistrate, under Section 164 of the Crpc and statements of the 23 witnesses all helped in establishing that Chandrashekar had murdered Poojary.

Principal District and Sessions Judge Kadlur Sathyanarayanacharya upheld the arguments of Public Prosecutor Kudriya Pushparaj Adyanthaya and sentenced Chandrashekar to rigorous imprisonment for life.

He also directed the District Legal Services Authority to consider Poojary’s family as being eligible for victim compensation.
