Mangaluru: There is no move to shift the slaughterhouse from Kudroli to the outskirts of the city, said Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil at an interactive session on Smart City Mission projects at the city corporation on Monday October 30th.
Responding to a question by Sudhir Shetty Kannur, a councilor, the DC said that it has been proposed to modernise the existing slaughterhouse at Kudroli as part of the waterfront area development. The sum of Rs 15 crore earmarked for modernising the abattoir is not final since it is only an estimate. Once the proposal is finalized, the cost might even come down.
Stating that urban planning is becoming more scientific now, Mr Senthil observed that while developing roads under the Smart City Mission, thrust would be given to have people-centric roads. He pointed out the need of cycling tracks and wide footpaths for pedestrians.
The DC said that during the implementation of the mission projects, priority will be given to de-congesting the central business district area in the city.
Accordingly, it has been proposed to shift the private bus stand from Hampankatta area to Pumpwell, build a multi-level car parking facility in Hampankatta. The office of the Deputy Commissioner will be shifted to Padil and the Central Market building will be re-built into a smart central market.
