- Importance to Swachh Bharat
Mangaluru: In order to realize Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Swachh Bharat’ dream, the city bus owners association have come together to install dustbins in phases, within all city buses plying in the city with the aim to inculcate the thought of cleanliness amongst its passengers.
Daily, almost 360 city buses ply to various locations from the city. The trips begin from 6 am in the morning till 10:20 pm in the evening and in a day do 8 trips. These buses are used by a lakh of people daily of which almost 25% are students who are dependent on the city buses. Hence, it is vital to maintain cleanliness within the buses.
When the bus is in transit, a few passengers have the tendency to dispose of the bus ticket, chocolate wrappers, fruit skin, snacks, paper, bottle and other things within the bus. Because of this behavior, the other passengers in the bus have to face discomfort. Hence, in order to avoid this and to maintain a clean bus, a few bus owners have come forward to install dustbins within their buses.
Successful in long route buses
A few buses which ply along the long routes in the district have already installed dustbins within the buses. The dustbins have already been fitted in a few buses plying along the Dharmasthala-Kundapur, Karkala-Belthangady, Belthangady-Udupi and other areas. Besides, even the passengers have responded well to the dustbins installed in the buses and are making a good use of it.
“After installing the dustbin within the bus, it also needs to be maintained properly. Dustbin is being used in the bus which I work I since a year. The passengers are also aware and dispose garbage into the dustbin. Thus, it becomes a small help to the dream of a Swachh Bharat,” said Devdas Salian, conductor of a private bus.
Dustbins to be installed soon
DK district city bus association president Dilraj Alva spoke with ‘Udayavani’ and said that in the first phase , dustbins will be installed in the coming week in 5 buses on route number 27 plying between Mangaladevi – State Bank to create awareness among the passengers in the bus. Later, it will be extended to other buses also, he informed.
