B’luru police use seized silencers to promote safe driving

Bengaluru: The Bengaluru traffic police have come out with a novel idea of recycling confiscated silencers into signages that promote safe driving.

Nearly 140 silencers, out of the 188 defective silencers seized by the Kumaraswamy Layout traffic police, were used to build two signage boards that have been installed on the NICE Road, Kanakapura junction and near KSIT college on Kanakapura road recently. Plans are afoot to install more such signages, urging motorists to adhere to the traffic rules in their jurisdiction in coming days.

Following several complaints regarding the nuisance caused by altered silencers, the city traffic police have been conducting drives to identify the violators and are booking them under Section 190 (2) of Motor Vehicle Act. As many as 8,256 cases were booked in the city till October 31 this year, whereas in 2017 they had booked  5,053 cases. The offence now attracts a fine of Rs 2,000 and forfeiture of the equipment whereas earlier an erring motorist needed to pay only Rs 100 fine and could continue using the vehicle with the modified silencers.

It may be recalled that the Adugodi traffic police had earlier used road rollers to crush seized silencers.
