Udupi: Karkala Town police on Sunday arrested a man for the alleged murder of his younger brother earlier this year.

The arrested, Melvin Santhosh D’Souza has been remanded in judicial custody.

Reportedly, the victim 24-year-old Avil D’souza had died after being assaulted by Melwyn in an act of self-defense.

It is gathered that Avil would often pick up quarrels with his parents and brother. On March 30 of this year, Avil got into a fight with his father. When Melwyn intervened in their fight an irked Avil assaulted him and Melwyn retaliated in self-defence. However, his blows proved to be deadly for Avil. Later, Melwyn disposed of his brother’s body by burning it near a pond.

Meanwhile, their father Albert D’Souza who was unaware of the death of his son filed a missing complaint with the police in April 2018.

The police investigating the case detained Melvin on suspicion. Upon questioning, Melvin confessed to the murder. According to police sources, the accused and deceased were in a drunken state at the time of the incident.
