  • Five decades fight bears fruit

Moodbidri: It was a hobli, however henceforth Moodbidri will be a taluk. Although it had all the looks and facilities of a taluk, it is amazing that it remained as a hobli, however the irony has finally been resolved. The five decades of fight has borne fruit with the official inauguration of Moodbidri as a taluk o November 25th.

Moodbidri was a taluk in 1910-12 and after a century has once again become a taluk in Dakshina Kannada (DK) district.

An important development

In 1997, when Udupi district was created, Moodbidri was once again ripped off from Karkala taluk and remained as a part of DK by being incorporated into Mangaluru taluk. In 2013, under the BJP government’s term, the then chief minister Jagadish Shettar announced the creation of Moodbidri taluk in the budget on Feb 8th 2013.

The next Siddaramiah led Congress government attempted to delay the taluk proposal, however during its final phase it was accepted in the budget of 2017, in December the draft was prepared and in 2018 January, by publishing the official notice, Moodbidri came into existence as a taluk.

The name

The name remains as Moodbidri. A request by journalist M Ganesh in this regard to the municipality was debated and decided upon, received approval from the deputy commissioner’s officer and was also accepted by the government and during the announcement named the taluk as Moodbidri itself.

New taluk

In 1958 it was Bantwal and now after 60 years Moodbidri taluk is being formed in DK and is made up of 28 villages. Along with the Moodbidri municipality, 28 villages will be added to the new taluk.

There is also a proposal for the creation of a Moodbidri A and B hobli. Moodbidri taluk is bordered by Udupi district in the north, Belthangady taluk in the east, Bantwal taluk in the south and Mangaluru taluk in the west.

The villages to be incorporated within the taluk

The villages to be incorporated within the Moodbidri taluk are Padumarnadu, Mudumarnadu, Daregude, Panapila, Kellaputtih, Nelliharu, Mantrady, Valpady, Shirtady, Padukonaje, Mudukonaje, Pucchamgaru, Iruvailu, Hosabettu, Todaru, Badaga Mijaru, Tenka Mijaru, Niddodi, Kallumundkuru, Kadandale, Paladdka, Beluvai, Puttige, Prantya, Marpady, Karinje, Kallabettu and Maruru will be added to the new taluk.
