DKShi seeks TN CM’s appointment to discuss Mekedatu issue

Bengaluru:  Water Resources Minister D.K.Shivakumar has written a letter to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami and sought his appointment to discuss the proposed Mekedatu project.

In his letter, DK Shivakumar said that the government desires to have an amicable solution with regard to Mekedatu project. It appears that some misconceptions about the proposed project have occurred in government’s and Tamil Nadu people’s mind, therefore, Shivakumara has requested the CM of Tamil Nadu to have a discussion with regard to this project and share the information and the advantages of this project for both the states.

Speaking to the reporters here Shivkumar clarified that the project was being considered for the state’s power needs, not for irrigation.

On November 22, the Central Water Commission (CWC) had allowed Karnataka to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the construction of the project at Mekedatu across the Cauvery, which has been opposed by both the ruling AIADMK and DMK.

On November 29, the Tamil Nadu government moved the apex court seeking orders to restrain Karnataka from preparing the DPR.

The Supreme Court Wednesday has agreed to hear plea of Tamil Nadu government next week against the nod granted to Karnataka for preparing the DPR.
